IBD - Big Ideas

We discovered many things about Karana and how she overcame many obstacles while living on the Island of the Blue Dolphins. This book has many Big Ideas interwoven throughout it. In your opinion, what would you say is the Big Idea of this book? What evidence from the book can you use to support your Big Idea? Then, find another Big Idea. How do the two Big Ideas connect to one another and Karana? What is the relationship between them. Use examples from the book to support this relationship.

  1. 1.One big idea in the story is that things have to get worse to get better. Your life will not just always be perfect. You will have some ups and downs in life, and that is okay. Your life won’t always be horrible either.
2.Another big idea in the story is don’t give up. In life, you should never give up. It will just make you a sad person. Giving up is pretty much letting go of something important to you.
An event from the book to relate to my big ideas is when Karana did not have enough food without her tribe with her, but she didn’t give up. Even though it was practically forbidden, she made bows, arrows, and spears. Throughout the entire book, she never gave up and eventually found a way, a system of getting food, and having a happy life without the rest of her tribe.

  2. My Big Ideas are Change and Perseverance

I can connect these two to the time Karana was left stranded on the deserted island all alone in the early chapters of the book. She had to change her daily schedule of life, since now she had to do men’s jobs as well as women’s chores. She even had to build her own house because she burned her hometown village to the ground in a rage of despair. Through all these hardships (plus many others) Karana persevered and never gave up. She knew that if she gave up, she would probably die.
I can also connect change and perseverance to when Karana forged a bow and arrows. She had only seen them made, and had to change them a lot for them to suit her violent wish: to kill the wild dogs. Several times when she had to fix an arrow or mend her bow, she persevered to try again. In the end (thanks to her perseverance and changes) she had a sturdy bow and sharp arrows strong enough to kill the wild dogs, and to hunt.

  3. My two big ideas are perseverance and risk reward. My example of these two big ideas was when Karana made her bow and arrows. Karana showed perseverance by not giving up when it was hard to find fine wood for her bow and arrows. She showed risk reward as well. The risk was risking that she would die if she made the weapon, but if she did not make them she would die as well so there was no reason not to take the risk in the end.

  4. Big Ideas: No matter what bad things happen, good will always come/perseverance.

These two big ideas connect to the event when Karana was left behind when the ship left for the new land, and at first she was sad. After a few weeks, she overcame her sadness and persevered to live a nice life until the ship came back to bring her to the new land. In conclusion, the two big ideas both relate to this specific event.

Big Ideas: No matter what happens, you can always overcome an obstacle that is stopping you from great things/perseverance.

These two big ideas connect to the scene in the book when Ramo died. Karana had to persevere and when she did she overcame the sad obstacle and kept living a peaceful life alone on the island (with animal friends to come). In the end, the two big ideas both connect to this scene in IBD.

  5. I will use the big ideas anything is possible and that things change and connect them to IBD in the same scenario.

When the Aleuts came to the Island of the Blue Dolphins for the second time, Karana met some really nice girl Aleut. That proves that anything is possible, because what are the chances of meeting a nice Aleut? When Karana got used to the girl, she left, and oh well, things change. Also, the girl leaving left Karana in a depressed state, which caused serious sadness. That also proves that change can change things.
When the ship that had come before had come again to get Karana (but mostly hunt otter), that had proved that even though Karana thought that she had been forgotten, anything is possible. Also, when she was on the ship leaving, her life would be majorly changed. What would happen to her? Where would she live? What would she do?

I will use the big ideas power and conflict and connect them to IBD in the same scenario.

When Karana vowed to kill the wild dogs that had slain her brother, that was showing power because she was standing up for her brother. Also, when she stuck to that promise (ish, because she didn’t kill Rontu) and killed those wild dogs, she showed conflict by engaging in battle with the wild dogs. That led to her having a pet named Rontu.

  6. Some big ideas in the Island of the Blue Dolphins are to recover from your grief and to be strong and brave. When Ramo gets killed by wild dogs, Karana is very gloomy. She only comes out of her hut to gather food. She burns down the bare huts, and finds a place to live somewhere else. Then, Karana realizes that she must find a way to protect herself and carry out the vow she made to kill all the wild dogs. To revenge Ramo, she must stop grieving over him so much. Karana has one problem. The tribe laws strictly forbid that a woman make weapons. Bravely, knowing that something terrible could happen to her, Karana makes the weapons. In this chapter, Karana definitely has to stop mourning that she is all alone, and be strong.

  7. These are my two big ideas I am connecting.
Things get worse before they get better
    Perseverance

Karana was left alone on the Island of the Blue Dolphins feeling miserable and lonely. Although she was lonesome she persevered and never gave up trying new things she’s never done before. From hunting to building cooking to weaving Karana never backed down on herself. Along the way she became friends with many animals living on the island. One that I will never forget is Rontu. Rontu was the leader of the wild dog pack until he became Karana’s pet/friend. Before Karana and Rontu ever became friends Karana wanted to get revenge by killing the wild dogs for killing her little brother Ramo. But Karana wanted to kill Rontu first because he was the leader of the wild dogs. Karana shot him in the chest and then something inside Karana changed. She wanted to help Rontu. Then Rontu got used to her and realized she was friendly. Karana also noticed that Rontu was a good-hearted wild dog. In the end a ship came and saw Karana so they could take her to their land, and that is how she was saved.

  8. When Karana was making weapons that would help her kill any animal that she pleased including wild dogs. She had to persevere and should not give up while doing it. I think that she did the right thing by not giving up because if she did give up she would die.

  9. My two Big Ideas are going to be, power and conflict.

A time in this book that Karana faced a conflict and saw power could be when Karana went to go and find a sea elephant tooth for her spearhead. When she tried to kill the baby another one of the bulls started attacking the baby. Karana saw great power in the bulls. They were so strong and were fighting very honorably. This big bull was in conflict with her and the baby bull. The big bull prevented Karana from killing the baby, but he also was an enemy (conflict) for the baby bull and his survival. As the bulls were fighting they became weaker, but were still very strong and powerful. And as they kept on their slashing at each other, the three of them each had a conflict of some sort. This is a time when Karana saw power, at a time when she didn’t have power, and when conflict was something everyone seemed to have.

My two Big Ideas are going to be, things get worse before they get better, and love can overcome everything.

A time that things got worse before the got better, for Karana, and when love overcame everything could be when Ramo was attacked by the wild dogs. When Karana found her brother, the person who made her jump off of the boat away, dead, it was devastating. Everything got worse. Karana made a vow to kill the wild dogs, which were the ones who killed her brother, she showed great power. When she went to kill the dogs, she ended up making a great new friend. It was the dog that killed her brother. Although she was angry, everything was good again. Her love for the dog overcame her anger and everything was better. She wasn’t lonely anymore. This is a time when things got worse before better, and love overcame everything.

  10. My big ideas are it could always be worse and things get worse before they get better. It relates to when Ramo died from the wild dogs Karana was left lone. Then she vowed to kill the wild dogs. Then she save the wild dogs leader and got three bird friends. Then she found Mon-a-nee. And then she was not as lonely as before.

  11. I am using the big ideas perseverance and conflict. These big ideas overlapped when the white men’s ship left Karana behind. The conflict was that she got left behind by the ship and her tribe while trying to get Ramo. She persevered through the time that she was alone by working hard to stay alive and not feeling sorry for herself and crying. She made weapons, collected food, found pets, felt joy, killed threats, and didn’t give up at what she was doing. I can also connect systems to this because she had a system for doing everything. She had a system to collect food, make weapons, and more. Perseverance, conflict, and system apply to Island of the Blue Dolphins in many ways.

  12. #1 Try your hardest and don’t give up.

Karana tried her hardest by surviving when the ship left her and her only company, her brother who died from the dogs. She tried her hardest by making a bow and arrow although her father told her it would break. She was useful and made a spear, bow and arrow and a hut to sleep in. She killed the wild dogs and kept the leader as a pet for company. When he died, she found a new wild dog and tried her hardest. Karana didn’t give up when all hopes were lost. She helped herself survive from the Aluets when they came and the wild dogs too. She also, hunted for herself so she wouldn’t starve. Karana kept hoping for the ship to come back and never gave up. Finally, the ship came and she worked at mission Santa Barbra.

#2 Always have a situation and always think of the best

Karana had a situation for everyday trying to survive. She would probably hunt for food or go on a journey. Then, if she didn’t she would spend most of her day thinking of what she would do. Always thinking of the best is good. Karana everyday would do that, hoping for the white ship. It finally came true after lots of time on the island and the best happened.

  13. IBD Reading Blog
There are many big ideas that you relate to IBD, but I choose perseverance, Caring, systems and conflict.
For my event I choose to do when Karana persevered when she made her weapons and she never gave up after many times of trying to make her spear, bow, and arrow. She was also caring when she swore that she would never kill animals ever again. That was caring because she would let the animals that she used to hunt live. Except maybe abalone. For her system of survival she would hunt, make a house, feed Rontu (or Rontu-Aru), make a canoe, and then eat one more time, and then go to bed. She also had another system of making weapons. She would first gather obsidian rocks, sharpen the rocks, and on a stick, fill it in with tar so that it would stay. Her system of making a bow was she would shape a block of wood, and then adds in kelp for the string. She made a spear by shaping a small piece of rock, and adding on along stick, and to hold them together by adding in tar between them. Conflict is when Rontu had a fight with the other wild dogs, which after the fight split into two packs. I think that the ideas that I choose were very related to the book Island of the Blue Dolphins.

  14. There are many different big ideas that could be possible for Island of the Blue Dolphins. The ones I chose are perseverance and always try your best. These big ideas can apply to many different situations, one of them being when Karana was trying to make weapons. Karana showed perseverance when doing this because it was not easy to make weapons and there were many steps she had to do before she was finished. This situation also shows that Karana always tried her best. This situation demonstrates that because Karana tried her very hardest to make the weapons she needed. Another situation that shows these big ideas is when Karana is trying to build her house. This situation shows perseverance because it was really hard to build her house and they were many things Karana needed to do. Nonetheless, in the end Karana persevered. This situation also shows that Karana always tried her best. This situation demonstrates that big idea because Karana tried her very best to make the most perfect house there was. As you can see, the big ideas perseverance and always try your best are definitely a good fit for this story.

There are many big ideas to choose from when it comes to picking one for Island of the Blue Dolphins. Two that are possible include never be afraid to try, and don’t give up. These two big ideas are shown in many different situations such as when Karana was adopting different friends. This situation shows that Karana is never afraid to try something new, like befriending animals. This situation also demonstrates that Karana never gave up. This situation shows that because Karana never gave in to her sad feeling but instead kept trying to make new friends. As you can see, these two big ideas are reasonable.

  15. The two big ideas that connect to my story are it gets worse before it gets better and Persevere.

Karana perseveres through the bat times of being on the island alone until she gets used to living in this fashion. It gets better once she is in the mindset of living alone on her home island. She meets all sorts of animal friends and perseveres to make tools, find friends, and survive on her own. She is used to it now because she has been doing it for a very long time, very happily. Although she gets slightly depressed or hurt at times, she still pushes through to find happiness until she gets taken away to the mission by the white men at the end of the story.

There were many big Ideas I could chose form but I picked Perseverance and love cane always overcome.

Karana persevered to kill Rontu, and all of the pack of wild dogs. Whenever she saw the wild dogs she would try to kill Rontu. When the wild dogs came to her house she shot two of them. She preserved and never gave up when she was hunting the wild dogs, and Rontu. Then when she finally got the chance she did not kill Rontu. She card for him and nursed him back to health. Then she kept him as a pet. She made friends with Rontu, and named him Rontu. They did everything together hunted and fished, and every thing else. Love had over come Karana because she did not kill Rontu she took him as a pet.

  17. One of my big ideas is that if you are alone, you can still find some friends.
My other is if you persevere, you will be happy. Karana looked around and she found all her pets. Karana persevered the whole time—she made skirts, found food, came back for Ramo, helped her pets, and all this made her happy. She persevered to find her pets, which made her happy.

  18. 1. I think a very important big idea is perseverance. You can’t live life if you don’t persevere. If she gave up nothing would change and she would die sad. Life is a gift and you should never waste it. Life is about setting goals and achieving them. Even if you don’t have a goal you should still have fun. Never give up on life, its worth to try. Perseverance is what keeps us going. Don’t stop believing! In the book she didn’t weep all the time when her people left. She waited patiently and survived. Like in minecaft but no monsters. Like when there was an earthquake she didn’t just stand still and wait to die. She tried to survive and never gave up. Also when she had waited 20 long years for her people to come. She waited and didn’t give up. She believed that they would come. Hope kept her going. Hope. And when she was swimming to sore to get her brother. She did that out of love. And when she was stranded at sea. She still had hope. Everything she did had an emotional reason. Love, and hope. She never gave up, never surrendered.

  19. One big idea is that you should keep persevering. Another big idea is that things have to get worse to get better.
In one part of the book Karana was trying to capture the giant devilfish, the devilfish attacked her by slapping her leg like a whip. Karana kept persevering and eventually killed the devilfish. Her motivation for slaying the giant devilfish was because the meat was plentiful and spectacular.
Another example is when Karana was trying to kill the wild dogs. They attacked her first but she persevered and hunted down four wild dogs.

  20. My big ideas are don’t give up and change.

These big ideas connect to each other when Karana starts making dangerous weapons. She doesn’t give up because making a bow and arrow is very difficult or that she didn’t have a white, long, strong, razor-sharp sea elephant tusk for the spear. She also went through change. There was change when she was making many hazardous weapons, this job is not for woman, nor for a girl. If a female made an unsafe weapon, many terrible things would happen.

  21. My two big ideas are: It could always be worse and Persevered.

Karana always did whatever she could with what she had and perservered, knowing that it could always be worse. For example, she made a fence with whalebones and carved rocks into shells. She also made a smaller canoe out of the bigger ones. She knew it could be worse because the whale might not have washed up on the shore, and then she would be unprotected from the wild animals. Or, she might not have found the cave with the rocks in it and wouldn’t be able to have a second house to hide in. Or, she might not have been able to make the canoes.

  22. Two Big Ideas that connect to this story are "Things have to get worse before they can get better," and "Don't give up." They are related to each other because when things are bad, you don't give up and you make it all the way to when everything is OK. This occurred when Karana was waiting for her tribe to come back for her, and when she waited for the white men’s ship.

Another two Big Ideas are "Perseverance," and "Everything will be all right." They are related to each other because if you persevere, everything will be all right. This was shown when Karana was left behind, she kept persevering and the white men came and took her away, and when she wanted to kill the giant devilfish she didn't, but at least she was safe in the end.

  23. 1. Do what you think you should do.
    2. Perceiver. If you don’t perceiver than you will not learn how to do things.
    3. A specific event that happened to Karana is when she had a hard time finding food she went looking for weapons, but she didn’t find any. So she had to make weapons on her own. She had to keep trying before getting a weapon right. If she didn’t she would have not been alive. The wild dogs would eat her or she would have died of hunger. Because she did make the weapons she stayed alive, and was found by people. She is lucky that she listened to her concuss.
