  1. I think Karana feels she has to be prepared to flee is because the white men will most probably kill her. She is ready to flee by having her canoe hidden, having extra food, and always looking out to the sea.

I think Runto changes Karana’s life by giving her a friend, even though it was a dog. Runto keeps her safe by keeping the other wild dogs away from her.

  2. Rontu changed Karana’s life because he made her feel like she was not lonely any more. She also had somebody to talk to. Rontu helped her hunt and find food. He even showed her were the giant devilfish was. He helped keep her safe because he is strong and fierce.

Karana feels that she needs to flee because she is stranded on an island, and she wants to see people again. She also feels the need to flee because if the Aleuts come there is nobody there to protect her. Some resourceful steps are to have a canoe by the water, to have a bag of her belongings that she might need, to have food and water, wood for making fire and a home, tools to make a home and shelves if needed, and her pets. Need to be ready for an escape.

  3. I think Karana feels she must be ready to flee from the island because she thinks the Aleuts will come and attack her or rip her away from her home. The steps Karana uses to flee is finding enough food for when she is moving and moving her things overnight to a place where she is safe from whoever she is hiding from.

Rontu changed Karana’s life because Karana never felt alone that much anymore with her new companion. Rontu kept Karana safe by fighting off some wild dogs and fighting of animals that she was trying to hunt that were hurting her, such as the devilfish.

  4. I was not surprised that Karana saved the wounded Rontu. I was not surprised by that because she is very sweet seeming and she seems like she would give anybody a second chance. Another time that Karana didn’t kill Rontu was when all of the wild dogs were coming out of a cave and she shot some of them but she didn’t want to kill Rontu yet.

  5. The reason that Karana wants to sail to the country lying to the east is because in earlier chapters when Karana jumped into the water and swan to Ramo on shore and the ship didn’t coma back so she wanted to sail to the country that they went to. She had to turn back because the ship was falling apart. She was so happy to be home because she was scared on the boat and she didn’t want it to fall apart well she was in it.

  6. I was a little bit surprised that Karana rescued her enemy, Rontu. In an earlier chapter, Karana had a good chance to shoot a sea elephant, but she didn't shoot it because she wanted it to win a fight it was having with another sea elephant. These actions say that Karana is kind and would not kill a wounded animal.

Karana decides to go to the country in the east because she is lonely and had given up hope of ever seeing the white man's ship. She is forced to return to the island because there is a leak in her canoe. Karana is so happy when she returns because she likes being home.

Rontu changes Karana's life because he keeps her from being so lonely. He also protects her. He keeps her safe because he fought the wild dogs.

  7. I was surprised that Karana saved Rontu because in earlier chapters she had wounded and killed some of the wild dogs. Also she had made a spear and a bow and arrow to kill the wild dogs.

Rontu changed Karana by giving her someone to talk to. Also, if wild animals tried to attack her house Rontu would fight them.

Karana decides to go to the country in the east because she is lonely and wants to see her people. She is forced to return to her island because there is a leak in her canoe, and she can't bare being away from her home for so long.

  8. I think that Karana feels that she must be prepared to flee because the Aleuts can come any day and attack. The resourceful steps that she takes to be ready to flee is that she has Rontu by her side, so if the Aleuts come, Rontu I think, will be on her side. I think that Rontu would fight on Karana’s side and help her instead of Karana’s enemy.

I was not surprised that Karana rescued wounded Rontu because I knew that in the book, there would be a major change and author did that so the reader wouldn’t expect it. So I was not surprised.

I think that Karana decides to canoe to the country lying east because all of her relatives and her tribe are all at the place, so she doesn’t want to be lonely at the Island of the Blue Dolphins without anyone. Karana decides to come back to the island because she thought it was dangerous to go on. She thought it would be dangerous because the journey would take two more days maybe longer. Karana thought it would be shorter to come back than to continue.

Rontu changed Karana’s life because he was going to be on Karana’s side and he will protect her if anything happens. He helps keep her safe because he can protect her if anything happens. Like if the Aleuts come, Rontu will probably protect Karana from them if they try to hurt her.

  9. 1. Karana feels that she must be prepared to flee because in the earlier chapters after the otter-hunting Aleuts leave, she thinks that they will come back to hunt more otter since they think there are no people living on the island. Karana takes a lot of resourceful steps to prepare to flee. She finds a canoe that used to be her tribe’s escape boat for six people and cuts it down to her size. Karana then fills it with two baskets: one for water and one for food. In this way, she would be able to jump into her canoe and row quickly away if the Aleuts came back.
    4. Rontu changes Karana’s life by making her less lonely, giving her someone to talk to, keeping her safe, and building a friendship that’s super strong. Rontu helps keep Karana safe by scaring the wild dogs to never come near them again, coming with her on hunting missions to help her if she gets hurt, and going with her wherever she goes so that no one can harm either one of them.

    3. Karana decides to canoe to the white men’s island because she is homesick and misses her family greatly. In the earlier chapters, we know that she burned down her village because of the painful memories and spirits long gone. Still, she longed to be with her family again, so she set off to the white men’s island to see if she could find her family. Karana returns to her island because her arms get tired and the canoe drifts a little while. During that time, her homesickness switches around. She starts longing to go back to the island of the blue dolphins with her self made house and all the happy times she had there. She is still too tired to turn the canoe around, but suddenly blue dolphins swim beside her and give her new hope and strength. She turns the canoe around and paddles to her home. Karana is very happy to be back on her island because after being at sea so long, The Island of the Blue Dolphins was very welcoming with all its happy memories of the days before the Aleuts came. She crawls back to her makeshift house and, exhausted from her hard work paddling the canoe, falls into a deep sleep.

  10. 1.Karana feels that she will need to flee from the island if the Aleuts come because she dos not want to be killed. I agree with what she is doing; I would do the same thing. Being prepared before this happens is really smart because you will not have time to prepare when they arrive. Some resourceful steps Karana takes before fleeing are: making a small canoe that she and Rontu could sail in; putting some useful things in it like extra weapons and food; and putting the canoe in a place that is close to the water where no one can see it. Karana is being resourceful and smart to get ready to flee if the Aleuts come.

    2. I am not surprised that Karana rescued Rontu when he was about to die. You feel very horrible when you kill an animal bigger than a rat because it is unbearable to watch them die. Also, if Rontu died, the pack might get even crazier with out a good leader. Even though Rontu was separated from the pack, they trusted Karana because their old leader was with her. Another time before this that she did not kill a wounded animal was when she was trying to get some sea elephant teeth for her spears and a fight broke out between to of the elephants and she did not kill one (they were both wounded), but let the fight go on. All of this makes me think that Karana is very caring to animals.

  11. I think that Karana felt that she should be ready to flee because of the Aleuts. In the previous chapters, she stated that she should always be ready for the Aleuts to invade. Also, in the future chapters, the Aleuts invade. Lastly, she knew that the Aleuts always came in hunting season. I think she should have been preparing for that ever since the Aleuts left. Some resourceful steps she should take are to have a safe, protected, secret hiding place, store food in that secret hiding place, keep a canoe ready to leave the island, have weapons to defend herself, and to have a back up plan if all else fails. Most of these precautions Karana has already taken, but she hasn’t take all of them. I think it’s good that she has taken all these precautions.

When Karana decides to paddle to the east, I think she made that decision because for the first time, she started to feel lonely. She knew that she would love it if she could live with her people. I think it was a good choice to try and leave the empty, deserted island. I think the reason she turned back was because she knew it was going to be a long, hard journey, especially since her ship was leaking. She also doubted whether she would even get home or not. I think she made the wrong decision going back, because I think she could have made it if she really tried. When she returned, I think she was overjoyed at the fact that she had touched land, and also happy about the fact that she was home. Again, I think she made the wrong decision going back, because I think she could have made it if she really tried.

I wasn’t very surprised when Karana spared Rontu’s life, because Karana is an extremely caring person. I also think that Karana thought that Rontu deserved another chance. I thought that was a good thing to do, because she needed a friend and protection. Another scene when she didn’t kill a wounded animal was when the two sea elephants were fighting, She could have helped one sea elephant win the battle by throwing her spear, but she didn’t. I think she did the right thing and didn’t interfere with their business. I think these acts make me feel that Karana is an extremely nice, happy, respectful person. She is the exact opposite of a mean person. I think when you are nice, nice things happen to you, and that’s what happens in future chapters.

  12. Yes I was surprised that Karana rescued Rontu because Karana had been so mad at the wild dogs before. She had made all these weapons to kill the wild dogs. Now Karana adopts Rontu as a pet, I am very surprised that Karana did this. In the earlier scene Karana did not kill the sea Elephant. These acts say that Karana has a soft spot for animals. What I mean is that Karana loves animals.

Rontu changed Karana’s life because he gave her a companion to do stuff with, Even though he is just a dog. Rontu helped keep Karana safe by protecting her from other animals like other wild dogs.

  13. Island of the Blue Dolphins

    2. Were you surprised that Karana rescued the wounded Rontu? In what earlier scene did Karana also decide not to kill a wounded animal? What do these acts say about her?

    2. Yes, I thought was surprised when Karana rescued the wounded Rontu. I thought she was going to kill Rontu with the spears and arrows she made earlier in the book. Karana decided not to kill an animal when she brought Rontu back into her house. The acts say that she felt sympathy for him. The act also said that an animal could play dead and bite you when you got close to them. When she tested that he did not bite her, so the effect was that she felt terrible for him, and brought him back to her house.

    3. Why does Karana decide to canoe to the country lying to the east? What causes her to return to the island? Why is she happy after she returns?

    3. She decides to canoe over to Santa Catalina Island to go and see her tribe, and get away from the wild dogs. The thing that causes her to return is when she is canoeing the boat starts to leak, because it was left in the sun to long. She is happy after she returns, because she builds a canoe so she can travel to Santa Catalina Island.

    4. How does Rontu change Karana’s life? How does he help keep her safe?

    4. Rontu changes Karana's life because she won't try and kill any more of the wild dogs. He keeps her safe, possibly because of the Aleuts, and other wild dogs that might attack. Rontu also changes Karana's life because she doesn't feel so lonely anymore.

  14. I was not really surprised that Karana rescued the wounded Rontu because I knew something in the story would change and turn into something people won’t expect. The scene of the bull’s fight was the earlier scene that she saved an animal. These acts say that she cares about these animals and in my opinion that she doesn’t like killing things even though she has to, to survive.

Rontu changes Karana’s life by keeping her company and “talking” to her. He makes friends with her and follows her around everywhere she goes just to stay with her. Rontu helps keep Karana safe by fighting the wild dogs or any other animals that might hurt her. Also if any Aleuts came he will probably scare the Aleuts away by running after them. I think Karana and Rontu are starting to become great friends and I can’t wait how their friendship turns out in the future.

Karana decided to canoe to the country lying to the east because the island her tribe went to was at the east. She returned to the island because she was too tired and she was taking the risk of going all the way to a faraway island. She is happy after she returns because she was so tired and she could rest.

  15. Karana needs to be prepared to flee from the island because there is a history of the Aleuts coming, and she does not want to be taken prisoner by them. Later in the book, the Aleuts actually do come to the island, so her predictions and preparations are actually quite helpful to her and Rontu. Some resourceful steps that she takes are that she had stored the cave that she found with food and water, and she worked on a canoe that she had abandoned on the spit, making it smaller.

I was not surprised that Karana rescues Rontu because she is the type of girl that likes animals and has a kind heart. Another incident where she did not kill a wounded animal was when she was watching the sea elephants have their fight. These acts say that she has a warm heart and does not believe that animals should be killed all of the time.

She decides to canoe to the country to the east because she thinks that her tribe might be there along with the white men because they went to the east previously when they left. She has to return to the island because she cannot sail any longer on account of the wind and bad weather. Also, her canoe is starting to fall apart. She is happy once she returns because she is back to her home that she loves so much. Plus, she feels safe in her home here.

  16. 2: Yes, I was a little bit surprised that Karana did not kill Rontu when he was wounded. Also, she did not kill the young sea elephant bull when she had a clear shot. These acts showed that Karana is too kind to kill a wounded animal and that she has a soft spot for animals in her heart.

4: Rontu changes Karana’s life by being a good companion. He keeps her safe by scaring off any animals that would try to harm her. For example, he grabbed the giant devilfish with his teeth and tried to lift it and shake it.

1: Karana feels that she must be ready to flee from the island because she thinks that if the Aleuts come and find her, they may kill her. She shortened a canoe so that she could easily put it in the water and flee from the island in it. She also made a second house near the water where she could hide and easily slip away to the canoe if she had to. She also found a hiding place for her canoe and made a trail from her house down to it.

  17. 1. Yes, I was surprised that Karana helped Rontu because she vowed to kill the wild dogs including the leader, Rontu. And she also made spears for killing the wild dogs. In the earlier chapter she did not kill the already wounded sea elephant because she wanted him to win the battle with the bull. These acts say that she cares about the wounded animals because she respects them.

    2. Rontu helps change Karana’s life because she has a friend to live with and it’s not so lonely any more. It is not so lonely because she has Rontu there. Rontu keeps her safe by guarding her home and sleeping with her. Rontu does this because she saved his life and he loves her. So, he is protecting her from animals that could hurt her.

  18. No. 4

I think Rontu changes Karana’s life by making her feel less lonely. I think this is so because Karana has Rontu to talk to and feed. I also think that it’s nice for her to have some company when her people are either dead or gone. I think Rontu keeps Karana safe by scaring the wild dogs off. This keeps Karana safe because the dogs kill people, for example Ramo. I know that Rontu fights the wild dogs because in the book Rontu fights the wild dogs on the seashell mound and that keeps Karana safe from the wild dogs.

    No. 3

I think Karana went to the country lying to the east of the island because she didn’t want to be on the island by herself. I know that this is true because in the book she said that it filled her heart with loneliness to be on the island alone. I also think that she was so happy to be back was that she had lived there all her life. I also think that she was happy to be back because there’s no place like home.

    ReplyDelete
  19. In my opinion, Rontu definitely changed Karana’s life, but in a good way. Karana needed a friend, and someone to talk to. Rontu filled that description perfectly. Before Karana met Rontu, she was all by herself. Rontu changed that. Though Rontu is only a dog, he is a loyal friend and a good listener. Rontu also helps keep Karana safe by always being by her side and always being ready to defend her. If someone or something tried to attack Karana, I believe Rontu would fight to his death to keep Karana safe. I think that Karana’s friendship with Rontu has been enormously beneficial to her, and Karana is lucky to have found such a wonderful friend like Rontu. I think that Rontu and Karana will always be together.
I believe that Karana took her canoe to the country lying in the East because of the sadness of being alone. I think that Karana was devastated that that she was no longer with all the people she loved and all the people she cared about. I think Karana thought she would not be as sad and upset if she went to another island where there were no painful memories or reminders of all the people who had either died or left her. Unfortunately, a little less then halfway to the other island, Karana’s canoe sprung a leak. Karana stuck a yucca fiber from her skirt into the leak and kept going, but that did not hold long. Finally, Karana was forced to turn around and go back to the island she used to live on, or face certain death. The journey back to her real home, the island where she had always lived, was hard and tiring, yet Karana did not give up. When she saw beautiful blue dolphins, she knew that that good omen would help her along the tough way home. Finally, Karana reached the island that she had always called home, and though someone might think she would be disappointed that she did not reach the other island, Karana was not. Instead, Karana was happy because she had realized something really important. Karana had realized that the Island of the Blue Dolphins was her home, and always would be. Another reason that I think made Karana happy instead of sad was that she had also learned that even though there were painful reminders of those who had gone, there were also fun and happy memories that were much more important then the sad and painful reminders.
I think that Karana felt she needed to be prepared to flee the island because of the Aluets. I believe the Karana was scared the Aluets would come back and kill her as they did to many of the other member of Karana’s tribe, including her beloved father. I believe that it was this sharp and painful fear that made Karana feel like she needed to be ready to flee the island. A few resourceful steps that Karana took includes Karana’s thing or personal possessions. Karana made sure to not have anything she couldn’t carry or hide with. Karana also had a safe house, or a safe cave as well. This cave Karana had discovered when she had hurt or leg. Karana also had shortened a canoe to make sure that she could push it into the water if she should ever need to make a fast get away. I think doing all these things made Karana feel as though she were protected and secure.

    ReplyDelete
  20. 1. I think Karana was happy to be at her home because she had lived her whole life and wanted to live like she had. She liked where she had grown up and even though it had bad memories it also had good ones. The blue dolphins the loud sea elephants and even the wild dogs made her feel were she belonged. You know if you’ve grown up somewhere all your life and you would be leaving forever you would miss the feeling and realize how good home feels. The reason she left is because she was lonely but then she found out that the Island of The Blue Dolphins is her home and always will be. That is why I think she left turned around and was glad she turned around after.

    2. Rontu changes Karana’s life by making her feel like she isn’t alone and life is well. It’s sad being lonely, you want friends, or in this case any company at all. She may like her home, but Rontu, made her heart (really brain), full of love. Rontu keeps Karana safe by fighting of enemies, and protecting her from dangerous things, like the devilfish. Rontu changes Karana’s life by making her not so lonely and sad.

    3. I am surprised that Karana saved Rontu. She seemed so strongly against them for killing Ramo I don’t see why if you feel so strongly would you give in. She shot him once why not finish him? But I do slightly understand. Maybe she had a good heart and didn’t want to kill the dog because she knew it was a good egg inside. All I know is that she didn’t kill him. Nothing really made it sound like she had mercy for Rontu. Her actions make it sound like she would get cold revenge and kill Rontu. All I know is that she had mercy.

    ReplyDelete
  21. I think that Karana feels like she must be ready to flee because even though the Aleuts hadn’t been to her island for a long time, if they returned and weren’t friendly she must flee. She also may want to leave the second that they get there because they killed most of her tribes men and her father, the former chief. If it were the same people coming for the same reason, she would probably be sad, even if they were to be friendly and let her be, all of the otter might run away again. To make herself ready to flee Karana has to make a canoe the size that she needs. She must cut one of her tribes old canoes into a smaller size that is easier for her to carry and that won’t leak. When she finished she canoed over to a cave that was safe, that she could use to store the canoe. Later on when she saw the Aleuts coming she was happy to have done this. She gathered all of the things that she would need including two friendly birds, a skirt that she had made, some stone utensils, her beads and earrings, some cormorant feathers, and all of her baskets and weapons. These are the things that Karana did to prepare to flee the Island of the Blue Dolphins.

I think that Rontu made a big impact in Karana’s life. To start out there Karana must have had some reason to not kill Rontu. She saved his life. She cleaned his wound and fed him. There must have been some bond from the beginning. They didn’t start out that well, with Rontu killing Ramo, but somehow Karana and him became friends quickly after. I think that Karana really needed a friend once Ramo died that she became pitiful and became Rontu’s friend. Rontu helps to keep Karana safe throughout the story. Things just clicked in between them. When the devil fish almost kills Karana Rontu tries to help. He did everything that he could and Karana survived in the end. Rontu just bit down on that thing, even though it tangled its long arms around Rontu he still tried to help Karana. Karana and Rontu both helped each other. Karana cleaned Rontu’s wounds and fed him, and Rontu gives Karana company and fights for her. Each of them seems to need the other in life. Rontu also protected Karana from the other wild dogs. To fight through them to help her showed that they had a bond. I can almost guarantee that Rontu would fight against the Aleuts just to help Karana. This is how I think Rontu keeps Karana safe.

  22. I think that Karana sails to the country to the east because she couldn’t wait around for the white men to come back to get her. By that time her tribe could be people warring normal clothes, for that time period. She might never get to see her tribe again if she were to wait for the white men to return. She wanted to see her tribe and be with them. She wanted to be with her sister and the rest of her family that was still alive. When Karana gets about 2days away from the Island of the Blue Dolphins when her ship stared to leak. She tried to use her fiber skirt to cover it up, but she keeps on having to empty the boat or she will drown. When she can’t empty the boat anymore she turns around to head back to the Island on the Blue Dolphins. Even though it is a long ride back it is closer than going the other way. Karana always knew that she would miss the Island of the Blue Dolphins, so she was happy to be able to be out of the leaky boat and back on the island.

I was not at all surprised when Karana spared Rontu’s life because I thought that with the reality of Ramo being dead I knew that Karana wouldn’t be able to kill something else, even if it did kill her brother. She would probably want a friend and to kill one of the last things on the island would make that impossible. If she helped him instead of killed him they could become friends and then Karana would feel less lonely because she would have a companion. Another case when Karana didn’t kill a wounded animal would be when two sea elephants were fighting the day that Karana went to kill one to get its teeth for a spear, to kill Rontu. When she gets there two sea elephants are fighting. Karana tries to wait for one to fall but the battle goes on. When one was on the floor and couldn’t get up, Karana could have killed it, but she didn’t. This shows that Karana has a certain respect for nature and animals that not many in her place would have. She has a kind soul.

  23. 1. Were you surprised that Karana rescued the wounded Rontu? In what earlier scene did Karana also decide not to kill a wounded animal? What do these acts say about her?

Yes, I was very surprised that Karana helped and rescued the wounded dog, Rontu, especially because he was an Aleut dog. I an earlier chapter, chapter 13, Karana also decided not to kill the sea elephant, though, luckily, that sea elephant was killed by another sea elephant himself. I think that these acts say or show that Karana is a very good, helpful, nice person who will take a chance to do something nice. I am probing in this situation because I am taking the fact that Karana rescued the wounded dog, Rontu, and going in, asking more questions and answering them. I am also using the depth prompt details because I am going into detail with this situation.

    2. Why does Karana decide to canoe to the country lying to the east? What causes her to return to the island? Why is she happy after she returns?

What causes Karana to take a canoe to the country lying in the east is that she could not bear to stay on the island, all alone, for another day. She had to leave. What caused Karana to go back to the island was that her canoe had a leak, and if she kept going, there was a chance that her canoe would just sink, for it had to many holes and leaks, and she would die. But if she turned back, then she would definitely make it home, and she would be safe. For this reason, she decided to turn back. Karana was very happy after she returned home because she missed her home island. When she looked around, she saw the otter playing in the kelp, the rings of foam around the rocks that guarded the harbor, the gulls flying, the tides moving past the sandspit, all filled her with great happiness. She was also frightened of what could have happened to her if she kept on going. I am using clarifying in this situation because I am clarifying why she did all these things, and why all these things happened. I am also using the depth prompt unanswered questions because I am answering these questions that were not fully answered in the book.

  24. Karana decided to canoe to the country lying to the east because she gave up looking for the white men's ship that would take her there, and she did not want to live in a place where everything reminded her of those who were gone. She took the smallest canoe of the four that were left. She went a long way into the sea, but she eventually turned back. The reason she returned was that while she was out at sea, she saw some blue dolphins swimming around, and they reminded her of the island. When she got back, she was very happy to be home. Everything that she saw filled her with happiness.

Rontu changed Karana's life by giving her lots of company like when she went to Black Cave and was scared by the skeleton and fake, clay humans. He keeps her safe by protecting her from the other wild dogs in a big fight and the giant devilfish that attacked them. Rontu was a big addition to Karana's life.

  25. #4: Rontu changes Karana’s life by keeping her company and helping her survive on the lonely Island of the Blue Dolphins. Rontu keeps company for when Karana is talking to him when something is important. For example, “ Do you think that ship is from the Aleuts?” Karana would say to Rontu. Karana also can have him for work by helping her survive on the Island. Rontu can help her survive on the Island by hunting or attacks. For hunting, she does need food to eat with and Rontu’s teeth are sharp witch can bite into the pray and kill it. That means that they can have double food for when Karana hunts one and Rontu hunts one. Attacks by the wild dogs or other animals could happen too. Rontu’s sharp teeth can bite into the neck and kill a wild dog or other animal so Karana doesn’t have to attack. Also, the Aleuts can attack her too if they find her.

#2 Yes I was surprised that Karana rescued Rontu because she had always been mad at the wild dogs before for killing Ramo, her brother. She made many weapons to kill animals including the wild dogs, and she used them to rescue wounded Rontu. Now, Rontu is Karana’s pet, and keeps her company on the Island of the Blue Dolphis. Karana is now happy with her new pet because it’s like another person helping her.
