IBD - Motives

A motive is a need or desire that causes a person to act. Sometimes the author clearly states the motives, whereas at other times, you must infer, or figure out, the motive. It is not clearly stated or is ambiguous.

Below are different situations in chapters 1-9. Select at least two situations to respond to. Determine the motive of the characters from the details the author gives. Type your responses in complete sentences and use part of the situation in your response. Are there any patterns, trends, ethical issues, details, unanswered questions, rules, big ideas, language that could support your response? Include at least one depth prompt in your response.

1. Tribe members keep watch over the Aleut ship and Aleut camp.

2. Karana leaps from the ship and swims to shore.

3. Karana vows to kill the wild dogs.

4. Karana burns the village where she had lived with her tribe.

5. Karana makes a spear and a bow and arrow.

  1. 1. Karana makes a spear, and a bow and arrow to kill the wild dogs. She did this because the wild dogs killed her little brother, Ramo. Even though it was said women could not make weapons or bad things would happen. An unanswered question would be why she made the bow and arrow, and spear.
    2. Karana leaps from the ship and swims to shore because her brother was on shore. And the ship would not turn around. An unanswered question would be why she jumped. Also ethics would be that the people on the ship were mean for they did not go back for Ramo.
    3. Karana burned her village because it remained her of all the dead that the Aleuts had killed, and all the people she missed. An unanswered question would be why she would destroy her so called home.

  2. Karana broke the rules when she made a spear, bow, and arrow. She broke the rules by making weapons. In her tribe, women were not allowed to make weapons. If they did, the bow would either break in her hands, or the winds would smother her and lift her of into the sky. The reason why she did this was so that she would be able to kill the wild dogs.

The big idea in the chapter where Karana leapt from the ship and swam for the shore was that she loved her brother too much to leave him. If she did, he would be stranded on the island and he would most likely starve to death or become sick and die. The reason why she did this is because he was a member of her family and she loved him very much. Also, being by himself, he would probably die.

  3. I think the tribe kept a close look on the Aleuts because they thought that the Aleuts wouldn’t give there fair share and leave. This is a pattern, because the last time they came, they left without giving what they were supposed to give. The people of Ghalas-at noticed the Aleuts checking on them, I think they did that to make sure the tribe didn’t notice them running away.

I think Karana burned the village because she was feeling lonely, and she always thought about the people of the tribe. The unanswered question is why was she only feeling lonely when she went to the village? Another un answered question is why didn’t Karana keep one of the houses as her shelter, instead building a new shelter?

  4. 1. The tribe members might watch the Aleut ship and Aleut camp to see if they are trustworthy or want to learn more about them. Also they might of
    2. Karana might jump out of the ship and swim to shore because she didn’t want to leave the island or wanted to swim because she likes to swim. Although the real reason Karana jumped out of the ship and swam to shore was because she didn’t want to leave her brother Ramo alone
    3. Karana might vow to kill the wild dogs because she didn’t want them to steal any more food, or just naturally didn’t like them. Another very possible reason would be that she was mad at them for killing her younger brother Ramo.
    4. Karana might have burned the village because she didn’t like being alone and got mad and felt like burning it. Other reasons could be that she didn’t want others to think that anyone was living there except for her, or if she burns it there will be smoke so the people who decides to come here wouldn’t want to go there because they’d think it is a burned up village.
    5. Karana might make a spear and a bow and arrow because she wants to break the rule of Ghalas-at, or wanted to see how good she was at making weapons. But I think the real reason would be that she wanted to kill the wild dogs or she needed them to kill animals for food.

  5. The big idea in this motive was that the wild dogs had killed Ramo, and Karana wanted revenge on the wild dogs.

Karana vowed to kill the wild dogs because at the beginning of the book the wild dog were always steeling the food from her village. Another reason Karana wanted to kill the wild dogs was that the wild dogs, was that the dogs were always trying to attack Karana. The last reason that she wanted to kill the wild dogs was that they had killed her brother Ramo. In conclusion Karana wanted to kill the wild dogs because they were always, trying to make her life miserable.

  6. Karana made weapons such as spears, bows, and arrows with the motive that she would now be able to protect herself from different animals. Another motive was that she wanted to kill the wild dogs that had killed her brother Ramo. With the weapons Karana was making, this would be possible. The depth prompt here is rules because Karana broke the rules of her tribe and made weapons, which her tribe forbids women from making. Her people always said that if a woman was trying to shoot a bow and arrow, the bow would break or when she needed it most, fail. But, despite the warnings, Karana made weapons.
Karan burned the village where she used to live with her tribe. She did this with the motive that it would take away all the upsetting memories of the people who were gone. Karana thought that not seeing the remains of the camp where her tribe once lived would make her feel better about living alone. The depth prompt in this action was big ideas. The big idea was memories. This was the big idea because she did this action in hopes of getting ride of sad memories that she didn’t want to remember any more.
Karana wanted to kill the wild dogs because she was really sad about the loss of her brother, Ramo, whom she loved with all her heart. So, since the wild dogs killed Ramo, Karana wanted to take revenge on the wild dogs and kill them. The depth prompt in that action was patterns because Karana tried over and over to kill the wild dogs and never gave up.

  7. Karana vowed to kill the wild dogs because she was sad and angry that wild dogs killed her brother, Ramo. She was probably scared when she found out that he was not at home. I can imagine being Karana and wishing that I could of saved Ramo. A relative is very important even more so when you are alone with only them and then loose them. The big idea of prompt 3 is sorrow and/or anger.
Karana made a bow, an arrow and a spear because she was determine to kill the wild dogs. Karana was scared to make the bows and spears because her tribe said that women aren’t allowed to make weapons. Karana remembered her father saying that when she needed the weapons most, and she was in grave danger the weapons would break in her hands, or the ground beneath her feet would brake and she would fall through. The language of prompt 5 is Karana’s determination to kill the wild dogs.
Karana leaped of off a ship and into the water knowing that Ramo would be all alone if she didn’t. She would probably never see Ramo again. Even though the water was icy cold Karana had to try with all of her might to stay above the shore. I could tell that Karana was depressed that she had to drop her baskets with her favorite skirt and cape. That move was necessary but unfortunate. In those baskets she also held her special earring box. The trends in this prompt were the things that Karana dropped in the water. I found them to be personally very interesting, but that is how people dressed back then. In the skins and feathers.

    3. Karana vows to kill the wild dogs.
I think Karana wants to kill the wild dogs because they killed her brother and she wants revenge. Also, she does not want them to kill her, so she must kill them or die. A pattern here is that after she starts hunting them down she kills some when they come near her, but never the leader. An unanswered question is: Why does she not kill the leader?
    4. Karana burns the village where she had lived with her tribe.
I think Karana burned down her old village because the memories of her friends and family were too painful. They were bad memories because her companions had been taken to Santa Catalina by white men and while trying to rescue Ramo (her brother) had been left on the Island of the Blue Dolphins. An unanswered question in this situation is: Was it a tradition to burn down something you don’t need in Karana’s tribe?
My Own: Karana goes to Santa Catalina.
I am pretty sure that Karana tried to go to Santa Catalina because she wanted to be with her tribe again. She was tired of being by herself and took a canoe to Santa Catalina. Unfortunately, the canoe fell apart and she was forced to go back home because it was closer. The moral of this situation was don’t try something without somebody experienced helping you because it most likely won’t turn out the way you want it to.

  9. Karana vowed to kill the wild dogs because the wild dogs killed Ramo in the forest when he was thinking he was chief. He thought he was chief because everyone else in the tribe had left to go to the new place, and so Ramo was the only man to be a chief. He wandered off but Karana was not there to stop the wild dogs from killing Ramo. The prompt is unanswered questions, it is, why wasn’t Karana with Ramo in the forest?

The reason that Karana’s tribe was watching over the Aleut ship and camp was because a long, long time ago the Aleuts had not shared the otter they hunted and a small battle started, and they did not want this to happen again. The prompt here is unanswered questions, it is, why did the Aleuts want to hunt otter here, in the Island of the Blue Dolphins?

  10. I think that when the tribe members watched over the Aleuts, their motive was to make sure another war didn’t happen. It was also so that they made sure the Aleuts would keep their side of the deal. One depth prompt I would incorporate into this situation is patterns. This is because later, they have a war, and that is the second time this happened. Another depth prompt I would include is ethics, because the Aleuts were very unethical by leaving without keeping their side of the deal.

When Karana leaped over the ship and swam to shore, I think her motive was to make sure Ramo was not alone and that nothing happened to him. On the other hand, when she got to Ramo, she completely forgot about her motive and was just happy to see him. If I were to incorporate one depth prompt into this situation, it would be unanswered questions. Why didn’t she listen to Chief Matasaip when he said he would be fine? He was chief! Also, why did she forget about her motive when she got to Ramo? One other depth prompt I would use is big ideas. I thought the big idea was love, because out of love for her brother, she jumped off the boat.

When Karana burned down the village, her motive was to make sure that every time she saw the village, she didn’t remember the people who died in the Aleut war. Also, she thought she saw the people who died in shadow form, which she didn’t want to see anymore. A depth prompt I would incorporate into this situation is big ideas. I think the big idea is that she was trying to put the past behind. The last depth prompt I would incorporate into this situation is trends. Back then they might have burned it, but today we would just leave it alone and walk away

  11. Karana leaps from the ship and swims to shore because she doesn’t want her brother Ramo to be left all alone on the Island of the Blue Dolphins. He would have to do women work to survive such as gathering berries and weaving water tight baskets to store food and water, not to mention older men’s work like hunting food, making weapons, and fighting off the wild dogs. Since Ramo is a small boy he would not survive on the Island of the Blue Dolphins. The big idea of this motive is loyalty because Karana doesn’t want to leave Ramo to fend for himself.

Karana burns the village where she had lived with her tribe because the empty huts remind her of the people that were killed on the beach and the people that had gone on the white men’s ship. The big idea of this motive is loneliness because it seems to Karana that the ghosts of the people who died and had gone on the ship haunted her.

Karana makes a spear and a bow and arrows because she intends to kill the wild dogs after they killed Ramo. The men and women that used to live on the Island of the Blue Dolphins said that if women tried to make weapons, bad things would happen to her. Some said rocks would smother her while she made the weapons. Others said the sea would swallow her. Her father said that the weapons she made would break at the time where she needs them most. Karana went ahead and made the weapons. Nothing happened. The big idea of this is superstitions because the members of Karana’s tribe said bad things would happen to her if she forged the weapons, ad nothing happened.

  12. In Situation #3, Karana vowed to kill every single one of the wild dogs that lived in a cave on the other side of the island because they killed her brother, Ramo. One day, Karana woke up and found that Ramo was not in their hut! She looked around for him, but she could not find him! But later in the day, behind a dune, Karana found the wild dogs walking in a circle. In the middle of the circle was Ramo! He was hurt very, very, badly. After looking very closely, Karana realized that Ramo was dead. Since then, why the wild dogs killed Ramo is still an unanswered question, and Karana will probably never find out why.
In Situation #5, Karana made a spear and a bow and arrow to get food for herself since everyone else was gone, but one of the rules in her village when she was not alone was that girls and women could never make weapons. It was said that the weapons made by women would break, or fail in a time of great need. This discouraged Karana, but she still made the weapons.

  13. 1. Karana makes a spear and bow and arrow because she wants to kill the wild dogs for killing her only company, her brother. She does need to hunt food for herself like sea elephant or abalone to be full with energy and not and empty stomach. She is still worried because of what her tribe has said about a woman with weapons. What they mostly said is it will break when you lack to use it or there will be a curse. She will need it too for when she is attacked ever by the wild dogs or other trespassers such as the Aluets.

    2. Karana vows to kill the wild dogs because they killed Ramo, and he was her only company on the island. Ramo too, was her brother which is part of her family. They will too, later attack her like when she’s sleeping or preparing food. She hasn’t planned how to kill the wild dogs yet because they are mainly furious and will hurt her. She does kill some at a time such as one day and wait and so on and so forth.

  14. 1. I think that the tribe members kept watch over the Aleuts' ship and camp because they didn't want them making a quick getaway with all the otter. They also probably wanted there to be no war. The Aleuts had promised there would be no war. The prompt for this is rules. It is rules because the Aleuts were not allowed to go away without giving the village of Ghalas-at half the share of otter. Another rule was that the Aleuts were not supposed to start war like the other Aleuts who came before did.

    2. I think Karana burnt the village where she and her tribe lived before, Ghalas-at, because it was painful to live there because it reminded her of all those people who were killed in the war against the Aleuts. I think she also burnt it down because the wild dogs that had killed her brother knew where she lived. They could wait outside for many days until she had to come out. The depth prompt used in this event is patterns. Since the wild dogs killed Karana's brother, Ramo, she thought they would kill her too.

    3. When Karana vowed to kill the wild dogs, she probably did it because they killed Ramo. She probably also did it because they endangered her safety. Karana wants revenge. This prompt is rules. It is rules because Karana has to kill the wild dogs.

    ReplyDelete
  15. 1. Karana leaps from the ship and swims to shore to save Ramo because he is left behind by white men. The big idea is too make shore that Ramo is not left behind. While Karana was swimming to him she was thinking of all of these terrible punishments because the only reason that Ramo was left behind was because he wanted to get his fishing spear and I told him not to get it.

    2. Karana makes a spear, a bow, and an arrow so that she can hunt and kill the wild dogs. She wants to kill the wild dogs so that she can get back for them killing Ramo. The pattern for this is that she hunts and then she eats it then she hunts and again she eats it. Another pattern is that she kills a wild dog and she keeps killing different wild dogs but every time she kills some of the dogs she cannot kill the leader. There was one problem with her making the weapons the problem was that the legend was that if a women made a weapon it would brake when she needed it most of all.

  16. Karana makes a spear and a bow and arrow.
Karana made a spear and a bow and arrow because she needed protection from the wild dogs. Karana also made the bow and arrow because she hade vowed to kill the wild dogs, and she needed weapons to kill the wild dogs. The last reason she made the bow and arrow was she needed a weapon to kill a sea Elephant, she needed to kill a sea Elephant because they had very large teeth. Big teeth were good for making spears, and she needed a spear for killing the wild dogs.

The big Idea in this motive was that Karana wanted to kill the wild dogs and she needed a weapon to do that.

  17. 3. Karana vowed to kill the wild dogs because they killed her brother, and she wants revenge on them. An unanswered question would be why didn't Ramo run and scream to let Karana know what was happening to him. If she had known, she probably would have done something to stop the wild dogs from killing him. Now, she is afraid that the wild dogs will kill her and her home that she worked very hard to make. She is also angry at them because they killed Ramo.
    5. Karana made a spear and a bow and arrow because even if bad things like the legend said did happen, it was her only means of protection. She probably wanted to prove that she could survive without the help of a man. There are definitely rules incorporated into this because there were rules that she couldn’t make weapons because she was female. The other people said that the weapons would break in her hands, that all four winds would smother her from every direction, and that her weapons wouldn’t work in the face of danger. She was probably very frightened to make them, for she thought many moons about whether to make them or not.

  18. 1. Tribe members keep watch over the Aleut ship and camp.
    1. Karana's tribe keenly watched over the Aleut’s camp and ship, because they wanted to make sure that they were only taking their fair share. The Aleuts said that they were not like the other Aleuts that had come before; they were not being trustworthy and lied. They were cruel which lead to them being like the Aleuts that came to the Island of the Blue Dolphins before. The Aleuts were cruel, untrustworthy, selfish, and rude. The Aleuts were untrustworthy because they killed the chief, and took almost all of the sea otter.
I am using determining the importance for a critical thinking skill.

    2. Karana vows to kill the wild dogs.
    2. Karana vows to kill the wild dogs because of what they did to Ramo. Her motive was to kill then so they would not harm her, too. She killed many of the dogs but she could not kill the leader of the pack. She was very angry when the wild dogs killed Ramo and then she vowed to kill every single one of the wild dogs, she wanted to do it all by herself. The wild dogs cave was near her camp, so when a dog walked out of his/her cave. She was going to kill the dogs with her bow and arrow, but now we shoot the animals with a gun.
I am using note the ambiguity as a critical thinking skill.

    3. Karana makes a spear, bow, and arrow.
    3. When Karana makes a spear, bow, and an arrow she feels in danger. When she was a little girl her father had told her that if women make weapons, such as arrows the arrow would fly the wrong way, or fly back at you. If women made a spear the spear would brake when you tried to make it. If a woman and you tried to make a bow you could only make the top of the bow. The only reason she wanted to do this was to protect her from the wild dogs.

    4. Karana burns the village where she had lived with her tribe.
    4. She burned down her village so that it would not have to be so painful for her to live alone. She wanted to get all the belongings of the village people that had lived on the Island of the Blue Dolphins. All she found was a broken piece of shell, a tiny piece of obsidian, and dust. She was in so much pain that she felt the need to burn down the village she used to live in with he tribe ni

  19. Karana makes a spear and a bow and arrows. She made them because she needed to hunt and protect herself from the ferocious wild dogs who roamed her village. The patterns are that the wild dogs come back every night. Also, when a women uses a weapon it always fails in a matter of dire.

Karana vows to kill the wild dogs because they killed Ramo. She is going to kill them with her spear and bow and arrow. The big idea is that the dogs killed Ramo so now she wants revenge.

Karana’s tribe watched over the Aluet ship and camp because they were afraid that they would steal all the otter and leave without paying them. Karana’s tribe was worried because before Aluets had come before and made war. The big idea is that you should never trust people who have already done something bad.

  20. Karana makes a spear and a bow and arrow because she needs them to get food, spear fish, and kill the wild dogs. Karana is also breaking the rules of her tribe because women are not allowed to make spears or bows and arrows and when women raise them for battle or when the women need them the most they would fail.

Karana vows to kill the wild dogs because the wild dogs killed Ramo. How Ramo died is an unanswered question because we don’t know why the wild dogs killed him. One of the wild dogs might have been playing or they might have trying to kill him for a reason. Or one of them mite have bin hungry and ate him we don’t know.

  21. For number 1. I was using details as a depth prompt, because you can always expand and learn more about this topic. For number 2. I was also using details also because you can expand and learn more about this topic that was given to you. For number 3. I was using big Ideas because for her, making weapons was a big deal and a big idea. For number 4. I was using trends because if you were going to burn down your own village that you used to live in, instead of using a stick you would use a gun, or a match.

  22. Big Ideas for No. 4
I think that the big idea for Karana to burn her village was because she was afraid. I think being scared was the motive because in the book Karana says that she saw shapes and heard voices of the people who were gone. I think she was scared because she thought they shapes and voices were ghosts of the people who once lived in the village. I also think that she burned down the village because of another big idea, sorrow. I think sorrow was another motive because she was sad that the people of her village were gone and the village reminded her of them so she burned it down.

    Rules for No. 5
I think the rule for number 5 that Karana broke was that she was not allowed to make weapons. Her tribe said that if she made weapons the weapons would break at a time of danger. I think the motive of making the decision to make her spear and bow was that she figured that she would die anyway if she didn’t make the weapons.

    ReplyDelete
  23. Karana’s motive to jump of the ship was to help and save Ramo because he was alone on the shore. She loved him and cared about so, she saved him and helped so he wouldn’t be lonely. She used ethics because she was trying to help him. That is good ethics because Karana was being very nice to save Ramo.

Karana’s motive when she vowed to kill the wild dogs was they had killed Ramo and she loved him so much. She wanted to get revenge on them, because they had killed her brother, and brothers are special. This was possibly showing rules because maybe a tribe rule was if someone kills your friend or family member, you have to kill them. Or, it was just ethics because Karana really, really loved him.

    ReplyDelete
  24. Ethic and Rule for No.3 Karana vows to kill the wild dogs because they were the ones who killed her dear, brother Ramo. And before, when her tribe was at the island of the blue dolphins, the wild dogs were roaming around Ghalas-at trying to steal food. This is an ethical issue because the dogs were showing no character when they killed Karana’s brother, Ramo. Karana should of made a rule with Ramo before the wild dogs killed him that no matter were Ramo goes, he was always with Karana.

    ReplyDelete
  25. Unanswered Question and Pattern for No.4 Karana burned the village of Ghalas-at because it brought back the memories of her people who died on the battle with the Aleuts. Also, it brought back the memories of her people who sailed by ship to the island of white people. There is an unanswered question. Why did Karana burn the village of Ghalas-at if her people might come back? There is also a pattern. Karana burns all the houses one by one.

  26. Detail and Rule for No.5 Karana makes a spear and a bow and arrow because she wants to have a weapon to kill the wild dogs with, to get food, and to make other tools with it. This is a detail because it is telling more details about why Karana makes a spear and bow and arrow. There is a rule. Karana is breaking the rule because on the Island of the Blue Dolphins, there is a rule that women may not make weapons or do anything with weapons. If they do anything with weapons, the weapon would break, and fall.

    ReplyDelete
  27. 1. Karana makes a spear and a bow and arrow.
Karana made a spear and a bow and arrow because she wanted to kill the wild dogs, for the wild dogs had killed her beloved brother, Ramo as he was going alone to get a canoe. I am using the prompt trends because today, when we kill animals, we do not normally use spears. We will normally shoot them with a gun, or put them to sleep, these days. I am using clarifying in this situation because I am making it clear as to why Karana made a spear and a bow and arrow.

    2. Karana leaps from the ship and swims to shore.

Karana leaped from the ship and swam to shore because she was not willing to leave her brother alone, at The Island of the Blue Dolphins. She needed to save him. Her ship was sailing away, and her brother Ramo had gone back to get his spear. I am using the depth prompt ethics because it was good character for Karana to go back to the island, just so her brother would not be left behind. I am also using probing, because I am probing into this situation where Karana leaped from the ship and swam to shore.

    ReplyDelete
  28. I am using probing, and clarifying. You can probe, because you can always learn more about this motive. You can ask why she jumped from the ship, made weapons, watched the Aleut camp, and ship. I am also using clarifying because you can ask WHY she did these things.
